About Legend Expedition Race
The Legend Expedition Race is a classic non-stop 6 day adventure race involving trekking, mountain biking, kayaking and other adventure disciplines. Teams of four must navigate their way unsupported through an epic 500+km course.
Teams race day and night pushing themselves to the ultimate limits of human endurance. All team members must complete all sections of the course and they must never be separated by more than 100m.
Each course is inspired by the local terrain and kept secret until just hours before the start. At ‘Team Lock Down’ on the day of the race teams receive their maps and race books containing each of the expedition checkpoints they must navigate to in order to complete their journey.
In the spirit of a true expedition, teams are ‘unsupported’, forgoing the comfort and assistance of a support crew. They must meticulously plan all their equipment and sustenance before the race. They pre-pack these into a limited quantity of plastic trunks which are moved to various points on the course by the race organisers.
Throughout the Legend Expedition Race, teams wear satellite tracking devices and this information is displayed on the extremely popular live website.
The Legend Expedition Race Half Course is the same epic adventure but covers half the distance. Teams or 4 have the full 6 days to complete the epic journey under the same expedition conditions that full course racers experience. The legs are just as challenging, but with 6 days and a shorter distance teams have a greater chance to reach the finish line.
THE LEGEND VISION
‘Doing a big lap’ of Australia is dream that many in Australia and around…
Each year a new and exciting course is developed in a new location. Courses are normally linear with teams often transported to the start line and finishing back at race HQ.
The winning teams are estimated to take 3 days to complete the course, all teams have up to 6 days to complete the course. The winning Half Course teams are expected to take 48hrs.
Athletes will need to be self sufficient and prepared for anything as the course and mixture of disciplines on the day will only be revealed hours before the start of the race.
Legend Expedition Adventure Races offer the ultimate long-format challenge, with teams racing continuously for up to six days across remote and varied terrain.
There are two course options in a Wild&Co Expedition Adventure Race: a Full Course and a Half Course.
Both courses deliver a genuine expedition racing experience and demand strong teamwork, endurance, navigation skills and self-management.
FULL COURSE
The Full Course is the ultimate test of physical and mental limits. It is the major focus of the event and the crown jewel for most teams. This course is extremely challenging and may have teams on the move for up to six days. Not all teams are expected to complete the Full Course.
With good teamwork and determination, finishing teams can expect to spend anywhere from three days through to the full six days on the course. No specific provisions are made for sleeping, and teams must plan their own sleep and rest strategy.
HALF COURSE
The Half Course is approximately half the distance of the Full Course and is ideal for teams seeking a slightly reduced level of sleep deprivation while still experiencing a true expedition race.
Teams begin the race alongside Full Course teams before branching off onto their specific course. The Half Course is often interwoven with the Full Course, meaning teams may travel many of the same sections.
Teams in this category have the full six days to complete the Half Course.
Which Expedition Course Is Right For You?
The choice is entirely up to you; however, teams new to expedition-length racing are encouraged to consider the Half Course as a first step. The shorter distance and extended time increase the likelihood of finishing and allow teams more opportunity to recover from navigational errors and manage fatigue.
Novice teams are welcome to enter the Full Course but must understand that it is extremely hard, technical and that there is a real possibility they may not finish. That said, many teams have successfully completed the Full Course in the past — the challenge is yours to accept.

Legend Expedition Race Format
Legend Expedition Races are linear events. All teams begin at the same location and navigate through each leg consecutively. At the end of each leg is a Transition Area, where teams change disciplines.
At most Transition Areas, teams may be met by race staff and any supporters who choose to attend.
Teams may be transported to the start line; however, the race will always finish at Race HQ.
While on the course, team members must remain within 100 metres of each other at all times. If a team member withdraws, the team will not receive an official finishing place. Teams may be permitted to continue Unranked, provided a minimum of two competitors remain.
The winning team in each category is the first team to cross the finish line after successfully navigating all legs of the course and finishing with all original team members.
Cut-Offs & Time Limits
The aim of expedition racing is to challenge teams non-stop for the full six days. Even slower teams should be able to remain on the course for the entire event duration, regardless of progress.
Teams must, however, return to Race HQ for the official race finish.
Legend Expedition Race Location
The Legend Expedition Race is designed to move to a new and iconic region of Australia each edition, gradually circumnavigating the continent and showcasing its most remote, diverse and challenging landscapes. Each location is chosen to deliver a true expedition experience, with the location announcement marking a key milestone in the build-up to each race.
Legend heads to South Australia for 2026
The Legend Expedition Race will head to South Australia, with the iconic Murray River forming the backbone of the next chapter of the race.
Race HQ will be based in the riverside town of Murray Bridge, less than an hour from Adelaide and set on the banks of the Murray — the third-longest navigable river in the world.
Flowing from the Australian Alps to the Southern Ocean, the Murray is one of Australia’s great natural corridors. Limestone cliffs, winding channels, floodplains and backwaters create a dramatic and constantly changing landscape — perfectly suited to an expedition race.
As Race HQ, Murray Bridge will be the launch point for teams heading into a demanding multi-day adventure combining remote navigation, endurance paddling, cycling and trekking across South Australia’s diverse terrain. The course will draw heavily on the scale and character of the Murray, rewarding patience, adaptability and strong teamwork as much as speed.
With wide horizons, big skies and ancient landscapes, South Australia provides a powerful new backdrop for The Legend — staying true to the race’s expedition roots while delivering an experience unlike anything before.
